I myself am an advocate of cell phones in the schools from a teacher standpoint. Being away from the building on many occasions throughout the school day, the cell phone is the only way that the office can contact me in the event that a student has to be picked up or the office is looking for a particular student. I do understand that cell phone use can be abused by teachers in that they can use them for their own personal use when they should be teaching. I believe that if a teacher is professional in their conduct, cell phone usage shouln't be an issue.

We had the same discussion about this in class last semester. There are times that it would be okay to use your cell phone. For example if your babysitter needed to tell you your child was sick. It would not be okay to have a call to tell you to pick up groceries from the store.

As for student use, I believe there should be limits, such as those imposed by our division in Tazewell Co. In regard to teacher use, I believe that teachers should act responsiblly and professionally in their use of phones. Certainly, you should not be conducting class and taking or making cell phone calls. However, as a mother of young children, I like the peace of mind that having my phone with me gives in the event of a family emergency.
